Tromping around in the snow

Not much writing today. Instead, I went out with friends tromping around in the wilderness.

steep mountain climb
one thousand feet
knee deep in snow
and dwarf birch and willows

breath on the air
a cloud of mist
sun just touching
tips of the range

ptarmigan on the ridge
hares hiding below
moose breaking trail
in new fallen snow

aching lungs and legs
knees ready to buckle,
we pushed on and up
until the top
